Do you know Marietta Blau? For sure, we all know the Marietta Blau Saal in the main building of the University and some of us have received a Marietta Blau Scholarship! She was one of the first women in Austria to study physics and mathematics. She conducted research on radioactivity at the University of Vienna and as a “freie Mitarbeiterin” (unpaid affiliate) at the Institute for Radium Research of the Academy of Sciences. She was nominated for the Nobel Prize five times, but never received it. As a Jew, Marietta Blau was forced to emigrate in 1938 to Norway. She passed away in Vienna in 1970 and no obituary appeared in any scientific journal.
The exhibition "Discovering Female Researchers: Women at the Academy of Sciences", which is now on display in the auditorium of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, presents Marietta Blau and other early female researchers, such as the zoologist Leonore Brecher or the archaeologists Maria Junker and Lisbeth Schäfer and narrates a powerful story of women in academia, of their achievements and setbacks.
This is still a most relevant topic for all of us and we are happy that one of the curators and DSHCS fellow Sandra Klos offers a guided tour through the exhibition exclusively for members of Doctoral Schools @univienna
- When: 29 January 2024, 3-4pm
- Where: Austrian Academy of Sciences, Dr. Ignaz Seipel-Platz 2, 1010 Vienna
The exhibition is in German, but Sandra Klos will give us a tour in English and there is also a leaflet in English. Moreover, there is plenty of opportunity for exchanging and sharing experiences on gender issues in academia during and after the tour.
