Sophia Bauer studied history at the University of Vienna, architecture at the Technical University of Vienna (TU) and medicine at the Medical University of Vienna (MedUni Wien). During her master studies in history, she was the project leader of “The History of the Professorship of Anatomy in Vienna”, leading to the publication of a website (https://historyanatwien.at/). In her master´s thesis she examined the field of university anatomy between 1735 and 1848 and its impact on the social position of the professors. Sophia Bauer currently writes her doctoral thesis under the supervision of PD Dr. Johannes Feichtinger. Also, as a documentation assistant at the Department of Anatomy (MedUni Wien), she coordinates the historical research and is one of the Austrian principal investigators of the project “Henryk Kadyi and the Anatomical departments of the Universities of Vienna, Cracow, Prague and Lviv – A case study in shared European scientific networks” (in cooperation with the Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University and the Jagiellonian University in Cracow), which has received a bilateral grant from the OeAD (Österreichischer Austauschdienst).

Current research interests: history of anatomy, anatomical teaching practices, historical networks, knowledge transformation and circulation, anatomy collections

Current research projects: In her PhD-project Sophia Bauer focuses on the history of anatomy teaching practices and their materiality in Vienna between 1848 and 1914. Thus, she (1) unveils (material) networks, “background scientists” and materials used for “everyday” teaching, (2) analyzes influences from within and without the university impacting the development of teaching practices in Viennese anatomy and (3) scrutinizes how teaching skills and knowledge were passed on to the next generations of anatomists. In the OeAD-granted project, she, together with the other project members, examines anatomical networks and knowledge transfer between Habsburg universities (Vienna – Lviv – Cracow – Prague) uncovering the roots and shared past of anatomy teaching in different European countries today.
