Ninja Bumann studied East European History, Slavistics and Political Science in Zurich, Vienna and Prague. She graduated in 2016 with a Master’s Thesis on “The Female Gaze on the Imperial Periphery. Comparing the Perception of Central Asia and Bosnia-Herzegovina around 1900”. Currently, Ninja Bumann is a PhD student in History and University Assistant (prae doc) at the Institute for East European History at University of Vienna. In her dissertation project with the title “Marriage and Divorce before Sharia Courts. Law and Gender in Habsburg Bosnia-Herzegovina (1878-1918)”, she analyzes the regulation and negotiation processes of marriage and family affairs before Sharia courts in Habsburg Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Research Interests: Ninja Bumann's research interest lies in the history of the Habsburg Monarchy and Eastern Europe in general as well as imperial history, women's and gender history and legal history.

Current Research Project: “Marriage and Divorce before Sharia Courts. Law and Gender in Habsburg Bosnia-Herzegovina (1878-1918)" 
This research project deals with regulation and negotiation processes of marriage and family affairs among the Muslim population in Habsburg Bosnia and Herzegovina. Thereby, it draws on an analysis of court records from the Supreme Sharia Court, an appeal body installed by the newly established Habsburg authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina after the Occupation. These files give an insight into the interactions and agency of imperial officials, local kadis (Sharia judges) as well as women and men from the local population. Hence, their analysis highlights gendered imperial and legal practices in Bosnia and Herzegovina under Habsburg rule.
