Counselling and Support Services

Pursuing a PhD is a challenging journey, and interpersonal problems or conflicts can arise for many reasons whenever people work together. Conflict is an inevitable part of human interaction; it is natural to have disagreements, and when handled constructively, they can be a valuable source of growth. Without conflict, we would lack diversity of thought and the ability to identify and address flaws in plans or policies. However, if you feel overwhelmed by stress, or if you experience discrimination or any form of assault, it’s important to seek support. Talking to someone can provide relief and help manage anxieties effectively.

We take conflict management seriously and are committed to supporting all students who need assistance. If conflicts arise during your doctoral studies that require external help to resolve, please do not hesitate to reach out to the DSHCS' coordinator, Martina Steer (+43 1 4277 40008), the Heads of School, the DSHCS' ombudsperson, or any member of the Executive Board.

We are available for one-to-one meetings to discuss your concerns and work with you toward a resolution. Our approach to conflict resolution includes the following steps, tailored to the specifics of your situation:

  • Analyzing contributing factors (understanding causes).
  • Developing interventions (brainstorming potential solutions and encouraging creative thinking).
  • Evaluating options (engaging in discussions, mediation, and prioritization, while identifying potential barriers to solution).
  • Implementing a solution plan and monitoring its effectiveness.

All information shared with us will be treated with the utmost confidentiality and will only be disclosed to involved parties with your explicit consent.

Additionally, the University of Vienna offers access to a variety of support services and resources, including: Helplines and services for women and men affected by violence; psychological and psychiatric support services; anti-racism initiatives, free legal advice on residency permits, among other services.

Please don't hesitate to make use of these resources when needed.
