Doctoral Program in Historical and Cultural Studies

Are you just starting your doctoral journey? This course is designed especially for first-year doctoral candidates of the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies.

What to Expect

This course will support you in settling into the doctoral program by providing:

  • Essential information on the organization of doctoral studies at our Faculty.
  • Space for reflection on your project, life balance, and medium-term career planning.
  • Preparation for the public presentation of your doctoral project (FÖP).
  • Opportunities to connect with colleagues who are also at the beginning of their doctoral journey, with more advanced doctoral candidates who support you as mentors, and people from the DSHCS, SSC and other units of the University.
  • Taught in German and English.
  • With the Head of School Clemens Jobst.

Throughout the course, we will cover:

  • The supervisor–doctoral candidates relationship.
  • How to write a good exposé and to prepare for the FÖP
  • Exchange with peers and faculty members.
  • Resources and opportunities offered by the DSHCS.
  • Research data management.
  • Ethical aspects of research, including the use of AI.
  • Funding opportunities.

How We Work

The course combines presentations, discussions, and group work. Additionally, the course is complemented by a mentoring program, where advanced doctoral candidates support you in preparing your exposé and for the FÖP.
