Call for Papers: Austria-Hungary in the Global Colonial System
Conference on October 10 and 11, 2025
Members of the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies at the University of Vienna, in cooperation with the Collegium Hungaricum, are planning to hold a joint two-day conference at the University of Vienna in October 2025 entitled "Austria-Hungary in the Global Colonial System."
In this context, we are still seeking research projects from members of the Doctoral School of Historical and Cultural Studies who are interested in the topic of Austria-Hungary and colonialism and who are willing to contribute a presentation and an article for a subsequent publication.
In recent years, the discussion of the Habsburg Monarchy in the context of colonial history has increasingly become part of academic publications and public discourse. By inviting submissions of academic articles and participation in the planned conference, we hope to contribute to the current Europe-wide research on the social, economic, military, and cultural aspects of Austria-Hungary's colonial past and embedding in international structures that enabled colonial or semi-colonial rule, connect researchers, and stimulate further studies.
This call is particularly directed at doctoral students at the University of Vienna whose research projects focus on colonial history. We hope to generate new approaches to the following areas, connected to Austria-Hungary's colonial relations:
- Cultural history
- Economic History
- Global History
- Intellectual History
- Political History
- Social History
- Administrative/Bureaucratic History
- Economic History
- Diplomatic History
- Dynastic History
- Environmental History
- Gender and Sexual History
- Legal History
- Media and Communication History
- Military History
- History of Science and Technology
- Culture of Remembrance
Presentations will be limited to 30 minutes each and can be delivered in either English or German. Interested parties can submit their proposals by May 31, including the title and a brief abstract, to a01300770@unet.univie.ac.at. We are happy to answer any upcoming questions or provide relevant information.
