Publication Grant (Proofreading & Copyrights)

The Doctoral School of Historical and Cultural Studies promotes the international visibility of its Fellows’ research achievements. To this end, it awards publication grants for contributions to peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes, provided that these are demonstrably related to the dissertation project. Funding is available both for the costs of professional proofreading services and for expenses related to image and copyright permissions. The grant amounts to a maximum of EUR 350 per publication for proofreading and up to EUR 200 per publication for image rights.

Program

Promotion of the international visibility of Fellows through grants

• for the proofreading of texts written as first authors in a language other than their native language
• for image and copyright fees for publications in international peer-reviewed journals or edited volumes

Target Group

Fellows of the DSHCS who wish to present initial results of their dissertation project to the international academic community and who

• have their primary supervision at the University of Vienna,
• are featured on the DSHCS website with an active u:cris profile,
• have successfully completed the FÖP no later than 12 months after admission and have concluded a doctoral agreement,
• have submitted annual progress reports without gaps (where applicable),
• cannot draw on funding opportunities from third-party or departmental funds,
• are actively involved in the DSHCS.

In exceptional cases, publications submitted prior to the completion of the FÖP may also be funded.

Type of Funding

Grant; the DSHCS may facilitate contact with proofreaders. Billing is carried out via service contracts after submission of the proofread article.

Funding Amount

• Proofreading: up to EUR 350
• Copyright/Image rights: up to EUR 200

Time Frame

The funded articles must be submitted to a journal no later than one month after the proofreading has been completed. The DSHCS must be informed of the outcome of the peer-review process.

Application Procedure

Applications are submitted online on a rolling basis. Funding decisions are made three times a year (31 October, 31 March, 30 June), and applicants are notified shortly after. The following documents are required for the application:

• Completed online form
• Application documents as a single PDF: Detailed abstract of the planned article, including a justification of its relevance to the dissertation project and the choice of journal or edited volume (maximum 3 pages) | curriculum vitae including information on previous academic achievements (e.g. publications, awards, conference participation) and employment history

In addition, an assessment by the primary supervisor is required, addressing the relevance of the planned publication for the dissertation project and its academic quality (complexity of the topic, quality of the methodology, significance for the field). This assessment must be sent directly to the DSHCS by email by the supervisor.
