Roadmapping? Project management for PhD candidates

Cartoon bathtub

You are at the beginning of your doctorate: the first major project in an academic career! Although you have had opportunities to develop project management skills before, a PhD has its peculiarities and challenges and requires you to make decisions, plan, reflect and evaluate on various levels.

First of all, you have to assess your ambitions and available resources (time and financial means, experience with scientific research, strategies for self-organized work, capability to cope with "crises", self-management skills). As PhD candidate you do not only have to deal with curriculum-related requirements such as seminars and the presentation of your project in front of the faculty. You will become a researcher. You are expected to play an active part in the relationship with your supervisor and it lies in your responsibility to organize support, to reflect on the quality of your research and accept feedback. It is pivotal to position yourself within your field and develop a publication strategy. Moreover, your PhD studies stretches over a long, exciting period of time with an obscure professional status in academia, but also in your private environment.

This workshop aims to support you to get a good grip on the aforementioned expectations, opportunities, and challenges and helps you to make the best out of your PhD. It will provide you with the theoretical basics, decision criteria, tools and models for the "project management" of your doctorate. You will develop strategies how to deal with crises, the impostor syndrome, critical feedback, with time pressure, and other changing conditions.

The workshop also offers specific impulses to reflect on your doctoral project and its positioning in your field of research. In addition, peer consultation, the exchange with other fellows, and the discussion of specific cases will help you to sort out your own ideas and visions. The focus on specific content will depend on the participant’s input and needs.

At our meetings and in periods in between you will work on your projet plan. You will receive theoretical and practical input, specific structural tools, and qualified feedback.
