Publishing in Academic Journals

This two-day workshop will explore the strategies that doctoral students can employ when publishing their research in academic journals. The workshop will address issues generally related to publishing in journals, but it will also have a focus on the specific challenges that students can face in publishing in English-language journals. Students will also be asked to bring along a proposal for an article and a potential journal in which it could be published, which we will discuss together in the final session of the workshop in light of the themes covered in the previous sessions.

Programm 

• Preparation
  We will begin by discussing the importance of publishing in academic journals. We will consider the factors that students should consider when selecting a journal that they would like to be published in, and what the differences are between publishing an article in a journal or a chapter in a collected volume. The first session will also address the psychological challenges that students often face when deciding on whether to submit an article to a journal.
• Submission
  This session will guide students through the writing of a journal article, beginning with how to structure the text around a journal’s word limit. We will discuss how students should decide on the content of an article, especially if they aim to also publish their research as a monograph. The second session will also address the specificities of academic English-language writing and style in journal articles.
• Revision
  The third session will focus on how students can respond to reviews of their articles, and what they should prioritise when reviewing their submissions. It will advise students on how to deal with criticism of their work and how they can overcome common psychological barriers – such as perfectionism – when completing their articles. This session will also give students tips on how they can promote their published articles and adapt them into other sorts of publications.
• Open discussion
  The final session will offer students the opportunity to further discuss any issues that were brought up in the previous sessions and to present their own proposals for publishing a journal article.

Coach 

• Dr. Dean Vuletic, historian of contemporary Europe, experienced writing coach. He has published books, journal articles and book chapters with companies such as Bloomsbury, Oxford University Press, Palgrave Macmillan, Routledge and Springer and he also has extensive experience in the public impact of research.
