ChatGPT & Co in the Humanities

ChatGPT, Jenni, and other AI applications are developing at a breath-taking speed and there is no doubt that they (will) have a strong impact on research and teaching in the humanities. How should we as researchers respond to this? Should we resist or should we use this new technology within a meaningful and ethical framework? What would this framework look like?
At the moment, there are no clear answers to this questions, but the Doctoral School of Historical and Cultural Studies and the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies want to initiate an open exchange within our Faculty about the use of ChatGPT & Co and cordially invite you to an information and discussion event.

Sebastian Tschiatschek (Research Group Data Mining and Machine Learning), Raphael Besenbäck, Lorenz Prager (both Department of History), Beate Pamperl, Martina Steer and Thomas Wallnig (all Dean's Office of the Faculty) will provide an overview of how ChatGPT and other LLMs work. Moreover, they will demonstrate practical applications of these tools and discuss the opportunities and limitations they present, e.g. in the context of literary research.
During our discussion, we will explore a variety of topics, including your own academic achievements in relation to these tools, the costs and benefits of AI tools, and strategies for ensuring responsible and transparent use.

The event is in German + English; drinks are served!

  • When: April 25, 2023, 4-6 p.m.
  • Where: seminar room of the Department of Eastern European History/campus + hybrid

Please register by 4/21/2023 to ensure we have enough space and resources. We look forward to your participation and an interesting discussion!
